PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSISTANCE FOR PRISONERS ‘ SYNDROME.
Despite the official announcement of one of the creators of Rus Sitting about the closure of the Fund, assistance to prisoners from this organization is provided with the participation of volunteers. Also, the search for volunteers among psychologists who are ready to provide free psychological assistance to prisoners and their families continues.
But in the meantime, I would like to consider what kind of psychological help prisoners need, from my point of view, both prisoners and specialists.
“PRISONER SYNDROME” CAN BE EQUATED WITH THE SYNDROME OF LOSS.
Bereavement syndrome (acute grief) is a strong emotion experienced as a result of the loss of a loved one. Loss can be: temporary(separation), permanent(death). The severity and depth of the experience depends on: personality, relationships, characteristics.
Psychological assistance is needed for the prisoner(TKE) and their families immediately after the arrest.
In this case, only with the help of a psychologist, you can accept the arrest itself, which is equated to “loss syndrome” and only a psychologist will help you go through the phases of the syndrome, which later will not lead to deep depression syndromes.
“Prisoner syndrome”, as well as “loss syndrome” distinguishes five stages according to the research of F.Vasilyuk and others.
Stage – shock and numbness.
A person feels the unreality of what is happening, mental numbness and deafness. The perception of external reality is blunted. In the future, there are often gaps in the memory of this period.
At this stage, suicides are very common.
Stage – the search phase.
Unrealistic desire to regain what was lost, denial of being in prison.
“It didn’t happen to us. We need to find another lawyer. You need to bribe someone to get me (him) out of prison.”
Phase – acute despair, suffering and disorganization.
The period of greatest suffering and acute mental pain.
The feeling of emptiness and meaninglessness of existence, despair, loneliness, helplessness, guilt, anger, hatred.
Increased bodily reactions: loss of energy, muscle weakness, asthenia, loss of sleep, loss of appetite, a lump in the throat. Difficulty concentrating, severe memory problems.
Phase – residual reorganization.
A person tries to plan their future life.
Very important in this phase is the help of a psychologist, who will help guide the construction of various plans in the right direction.
Phase – completion.
The meaning and task at this stage is for a person to forgive himself, let go of the offense, and take responsibility for his life.
Providing assistance for “prisoner syndrome”.
The professional work of a psychologist is not to dull the sharpness of emotional experiences, but to help pass all the phases of the “prisoner syndrome”.
What is he, the ideal psychologist for a prisoner? The consultant should be able to:
listen, accept, not judge;
be able to give hope, encourage;
submit the correct information.
For diagnosis and concept, some psychologists use the Worden concept, which is absolutely correct.
The essence of psychological help at different stages:
the stage of shock.
Bring a person out of a state of shock. It is important to keep in mind the protective mechanisms. Prevent suicidal thoughts.
Stage of anger and resentment.
Help a person understand that negative feelings are a normal reaction and help them Express them in an acceptable way.
The acute phase reaction.
At this stage, it is necessary to talk to the person, help to vent the pain, complex feelings. Track suicidal thoughts.
It is necessary to help re-engage in life, plan for the future. To make and discuss plans for the next day, week and month.
Problems in the consultation process are individual.
An experienced psychologist will never treat a prisoner as a criminal, a convict – because an intelligent person knows that acquittals practically do not exist, and falsifications of criminal cases in many courts are considered in pink glasses.
Very often, prisoners and their families need information assistance – in this case, even simple explanations from a psychologist can help to cope with fear and tension.
